The drawings that don’t have a client. Fifteen-ish years of lettering, risograph, airbrushed creatures, fake album covers — and one bumper sticker that makes strangers roll down their window.

A daisy-headed character with banana legs walking across a purple starfield — from the ongoing Take Care series
🚗 Bumperware

I get honked at a lot.

These are real. They’re on my actual car, in Los Angeles, where people have real opinions about a serif. “Honk if you’re tired” has started more freeway conversations than I can count — not all of them friendly.

✿ Take Care

A playlist and a painting for getting through it.

Take Care started the week after the 2016 election — a self-initiated series of playlists, each with a new airbrushed cover, made to hand someone (usually me) something soft to hold. It kept going. The covers were selected for American Illustration.

Airbrushed illustration: a smiling sun hugging a crying cloud under a rainbow
Illustration: a daisy-headed figure with banana legs and orange shoes
Illustration: an inflatable golden star character dancing on a checkerboard floor
Illustration: a floppy-eared dog character in a melting hat holding a pink flower against a starry sky
Illustration: a pastel stacked-bead vase character with droopy flowers on a green grid
◎ 10 × the year

Ten album covers nobody asked me to redraw.

Every year I pick ten records I love and redesign the sleeve — a self-set brief with a hard count and a soft rulebook. It’s the fastest way I know to try on ten different ways of drawing in a row.

Reimagined album sleeve on a vinyl mockup — melted white line-work face over a sunset-to-blue gradient, 'The Nice Price'
Reimagined Blood Orange 'Negro Swan' sleeve on a vinyl mockup — an outstretched hand with long nails against a chain-link diamond pattern
Reimagined Robyn 'Honey' sleeve on a vinyl mockup — a honey-filled hourglass with a pink heart
Reimagined sleeve on a vinyl mockup — hand-drawn chrome script reading 'mudsyn / Body Wash' with a soap-bottle character on a blue grid
♪ Melody Lounge

Flyers for a night I also DJ.

Magic Ways, first Fridays, Melody Lounge in Chinatown. I make the flyer, then I show up and play the records. Vertical integration.

Event flyer: green duotone portrait of a DJ with a Walkman and cassette, 'Magic Ways / Melody Lounge', dated 6.7
Event flyer: blue halftone galaxy, 'Magic Ways / Melody Lounge', dated 8.2
Event flyer: purple-and-gold duotone of a figure holding a blow-dryer like a spy, 'Magic Ways / Melody Lounge', dated 9.6
▶ Facebook · New Year’s Eve

The one that moves.

A New Year’s Eve moment for Facebook: I drew the whole cast — the wordmark itself, in top hats — and Animade brought it to life. Eleven looping seconds of chrome creatures counting down to 2022.

✎ When someone does ask

The work with an art director attached.

Illustration and hand-lettering for the press — sad obsolete gadgets, overwhelmed houseplants, a whole finance startup that just wants you to stop doing stupid stuff. Same hand, someone else’s headline.

Editorial illustration: a teary-eyed CD-ROM sitting on a pile of obsolete media — VHS, cassette, iPod, floppy disk
The New York Times · “The Final Delivery”

Illustration in a loose ink style: a tuxedoed man rubbing his eyes beside a bottle of Suntory whisky — 'For relaxing times, make it Suntory time.'

✂ Made anyway

Things that only exist because I printed them.

A riso travel zine about Tokyo street style. A cassette that’s really just an excuse for a cover. The word VOTE, blown up until it’s uncomfortable. Objects with no reason to exist except that I wanted them to.

A risograph zine on a spray-painted surface — purple grid cover with pink halftone circles, 'Tokyo Day Trippin' by Grace Danico'
Interior spread of the Tokyo zine — blue pen sketches of people and street-style outfits on pink paper
Hand-lettering: the word VOTE in psychedelic chrome bubble letters, grainy rainbow gradient on black
Hand-lettering: 'hi, I'm BUSY' in melted chrome type on a hot-pink ground
A cassette in a clear case on a green ground — iridescent cover art with a daisy-headed, banana-bodied character bouncing through bubbles
The point of it

Fun takes intention, and connection takes care. If anything here made you feel something, consider the job done.

Bumper sticker: 'Back it up! Only you can prevent data loss' with a walking file-folder character
